New Book 'Remaking Berlin. A History of the City through Infrastructure, 1920-2020'

Written by THESys Member Timothy Moss and published by MIT Press, the book is available now!

This research monograph explores Berlin's turbulent twentieth-century history through the lens of its water and energy infrastructures. It reveals how, through a century of changing regimes, geopolitical interventions and socioeconomic volatility, Berlin's networked urban infrastructures have acted as medium and manifestation of municipal, national and international politics. Taking Berlin as an exemplar, the author calls on researchers to take a fresh look at urban infrastructure histories, offering new ways of conceptualizing the multiple temporalities and spatialities of the networked city. The research for this book and its publication were generously supported by the Gerda Henkel Foundation. For more information see link: https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/remaking-berlin

At the book’s launch, hosted by IRI THESys on 1 October 2020, the author Tim Moss discussed its findings and implications for urban infrastructure research and policy together with three experts of urban, environmental and technology history.
