Tobias Krüger

Board Member, Member, Research Group Leader
Transformations and uncertainties of land-water systems

Tobias Krüger is Junior Professor at Humboldt-Universität´s Department of Geography. He studied Geoecology at the Technical University of Braunschweig and obtained his doctorate in Environmental Science in 2009 at Lancaster University with a dissertation on "Uncertainties in Modelling Agricultural Phosphorus Transfers." From 2008 to 2013, he worked as Senior Research Associate, Associate Tutor and Knowledge Exchange Fellow at the University of East Anglia. Tobias' research is concerned with all matters of uncertainty in science and science for policy, with a focus on hydrology and water resources management. He has been developing methods of quantifying and propagating uncertainties in scientific data and models. Nine years of trying to make this research useful for catchment management have taught him the value of co-producing knowledge with catchment stakeholders and the potential of adaptive management.

At IRI THESys, Tobias is Research Group Leader since 2013 and sets his work on uncertainty in hydrology and water resources management in context with the transformations of land-water systems globally. Together with PhD student Karen Lebek, he is investigating community-level water security in rural South Africa. Together with PhD student Beril Ocakli and post-doc Dimitrios Zikos, he is investigating mining conflict and cooperation in Kyrgyzstan. Together with post-doc Jaime Garcia and PhD student Leticia Lima, he has analysed and supported ecosystem services management in Colombia. These applied projects are accompanied by methodological work on uncertainty (with PhD student Hoseung Jung among others) and transdisciplinarity. One of his goals at IRI THESys is to create knowledge exchange interfaces bringing together scientists and other members of the public. As a teacher, Tobias is offering courses on basic and advanced statistics, social hydrology and risk and uncertainty at the Geography Department and the Agricultural Economics Department of Humboldt-Universität.
