"Research for global sustainability can only be organised along and across traditional disciplinary boundaries. My role in THESys is about facilitating such research approaches to establish interdisciplinary thinking in science and education." Sebastian van der Linden, 2014

Dr. Sebastian van der Linden was a Senior Scientist at the Geography Department of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the first Managing Director of IRI THESys (2012-2017). He studied Applied Environmental Sciences at Trier University and the University of Edinburgh. His doctoral research at the Geography Department of Humboldt-Universität focused on remote sensing of urban areas. Since October 2019, Sebastian is a professor for remote sensing and geoinformation science at University of Greifswald. His current research projects look at the development of remote sensing approaches for mapping gradual environmental changes, e.g. in urban areas or semi-natural landscapes.

As Managing Director of IRI THESys, Sebastian brought forward the foundation and implementation of the institute from November 2012 until October 2017. He was responsible for the coordination of scientific activities and conceptual development at IRI THESys and headed the institute's administration. From 2015-2019, Sebastian was coordinator and supervisor of the Deutschlandstipendium-Themenklasse "Sustainability & Global Justice", an annual interdisciplinary group of BA and MA students based at IRI THESys.
