Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Modelling for Land Use Planning and offsets design in Colombia

Dr. Jaime García Márquez is a postdoctoral researcher at IRI THESys. His research interests include conservation and biodiversity offsets design, ecosystem services and biodiversity modelling, and quantifying uncertainties in ecological modelling.

My current research is primarily focused on Colombia (not Columbia!). Colombia is now considered an emergent economy, but this economic growth goes hand in hand with many industries (national and international) investing in Colombia (especially multinational oil and mining companies) and also to a certain degree with infrastructure investments. As such, Colombia is entering a new phase of post-conflict where new trends in land use dynamics are expected.

My research projects at IRI THESys, which I am conducting in collaboration with partners in Colombia, will focus on quantifying current spatial patterns of land use dynamics and potential adverse impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem services (cultural, terrestrial and hydrological). For this purpose, I will use several statistical and spatial modelling techniques to account for uncertainties in model predictions. Moreover, I will incorporate participative approaches for model parameterization and assessment.

Results will inform companies and environmental-control entities about better methodologies for land use planning and provide guidelines for potential environmental compensation plans (reserve selection, landscape connectivity, etc.)
