Led by the London School of Economics and Political Science, in collaboration with the University of East Anglia’s Water Security Research Centre, the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), South Africa’s Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and UEA’s Climatic Research Unit (CRU). The project is funded by the Belmont Forum’s International Opportunities Fund.

Southern Africa is emblematic of global water security issues. The focus of the project is on management, investment and seasonal hydro-meteorological forecasting towards meeting agricultural, energy and other water demands under high variability, climate change and socioeconomic uncertainty, which have yet to be assessed in an integrated manner and linked to end-users and public investment.

We will complement the project by integrating the hydro-meteorological and hydro-economic research of the team with local case studies tackling acute decision problems, such as multi-use reservoir management and grower adaptation to seasonal forecasts, with particular emphasis on integrating epistemic or lack-of-knowledge uncertainties into more traditional risk-based frameworks. The case studies will emerge from an end-user co-design phase of the research at the beginning of the project.
