Cleaning up after ourselves. The role of carbon dioxide removal in reaching the Paris climate goals

Hybrid: HU Berlin, Dorotheenstraße 26, room 208 & on ZoomThe last assessment report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2023 featured a scientific consensus that the Paris climate goals require driving carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to net zero emissions by the middle of the century. This means that any CO2 emissions we are still releasing in 2050 would need to be balanced out by taking CO2 from the atmosphere and “locking” it away. We call this Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR). In this lecture, Sabine Fuss will talk about how she got to work on the theme of CDR, why it is so important, what we know and don’t know about it, and how we can build on this knowledge to stop global warming.
Prof. Dr. Sabine Fuss is Co-Chair of the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC), where she heads the working group on Sustainable Resource Management and Global Change. She is also a professor at the Geography Department of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
