1-12 September 2014

Organized by the IRI THESys, Humboldt Universität´s KOSMOS Summer University 2014 FutureLand – Competition for Land will focus on global changes that are increasing and diversifying land use pressures.

Meeting the demands of food, fibre, feed and fuel production within limited planetary boundaries and under conditions of a growing population and rapid environmental change presents one of the major challenges to sciences, politics and societies at the beginning of the 21st century.

The KOSMOS Summer University FutureLand will bring together an international group of excellent senior scholars with graduate students and early post-docs from a wide range of scientific disciplines, such as agricultural sciences, earth and environmental sciences, ecology, economics, geography, philosophy, political science, social anthropology or related disciplines. Intensive contact and exchange between participants will foster a multi-perspective view on the challenges of analyzing land use competition in a mix of plenary and keynote sessions, thematic working groups, methods classes and writing sessions. We expect that the KOSMOS Summer University will yield both rich empirical case studies of land use competition and advances in interdisciplinary perspectives on land-use competition.

KOSMOS is a new event format that takes place at Humboldt-Universität since 2011. It aims at strategic strengthening of international cooperation with excellent partners. Researchers from Humboldt-Universität`s faculties and partner institutions from abroad meet for two weeks for interdisciplinary research, international collaboration, and the promotion of young researchers.
