Towards Sustainable Business and Finance within the Planetary Boundaries: A Legal Approach
Calls for more sustainability in corporate business transactions and financial markets have become increasingly urgent, not only since the outbreak of the financial crisis. There is significant potential for innovation in this area. Law, with its regulations, prohibitions, enabling and incentivizing functions, can and must be applied to provide a framework for positive sustainability developments that are already emerging in the markets and to promote them as much as possible. At the same time, the law can discipline companies that disregard existing sustainability requirements more effectively than before. In line with the interdisciplinary approach of Alexander von Humboldt’s KOSMOS lectures, this lecture explores the significance of “Business and Finance” for the transition to a sustainable society from a legal perspective.
