The Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is once again awarding scholarships from the Deutschlandstipendium programme to its students. Among them are 15 positions for the Humboldt-Scholarship Sustainability & Global Justice, which is based at IRI THESys. Interested students are invited to apply until 15 January 2024!
Next Humboldt-Scholarship: Sustainability and Democracy
Starting in April 2024, 15 Bachelor’s and Master’s students will be given the opportunity to develop an interdisciplinary and team-based research project throughout the course of one year. In 2024/25, the student research will focus on the topic of “Sustainability and Democracy”.
Both sustainability and democracy are increasingly under pressure. While multiple crises such as the climate crisis motivate some people to participate in politics, others fear a restriction of freedoms. Many are concerned about the suitability of democracy and the possible need for reform in the face of multiple crises. Others, on the other hand, see long-term ecological well-being as a prerequisite for successful democracy; and – conversely – democratic principles as a basic requirement for sustainability. The 2024/25 class will explore this area of tension. For example, various forms of political participation for sustainability and climate protection can be analysed on different scales, questions relating to civil engagement and civil disobedience can be discussed, and the different time scales of democratic processes and urgent change can be examined.
The thematic area ‘Sustainability & Democracy’ offers the scholarship holders the opportunity to contribute the knowledge and methods of their respective fields of study to the joint interdisciplinary work and thus enable an ecological, economic, ethical and social view of the problem. Special attention is paid to the development and utilisation of creative formats of knowledge and science communication for the presentation and documentation of the results of student research.
