Putting Down Roots: Community Gardens as Spaces for Co-Creation and Social Integration
(The event will be conducted in German without translation)
16 June 2026, 13.00-14.00
Online upon registration
Community gardens are places where people can come together, learn from one another and actively shape their environment. Particularly in the context of displacement and new beginnings, these spaces foster exchange, healing and new connections. In this webinar, we will provide insights into the practical aspects of such projects, highlight key challenges and discuss which approaches have proven effective in everyday life.
About the speakers:
Anuscheh Amir-Khalili has been a research assistant at anstiftung since 2022 and is the contact person for post-migrant communities, particularly in the area of community gardens.
Previously, she studied visual anthropology with a focus on 'People, Nature and the Environment' and founded the association Flamingo in 2015, a network for refugee women* and children. Since 2019, Flamingo has been running the transcultural community garden Hevrîn Xelef in Berlin-Neukölln.
In her visually rich presentation "From the NGO office to the founding of a community garden", Anuscheh Amir-Khalili uses the example of the Hevrîn Xelef medicinal herb garden in Berlin-Neukölln to show how gardens can serve as places of healing, mourning and remembrance.
Yifat Maor-Tanuschev is a multidisciplinary artist (Jerusalem Academy of Visual Theatre, Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts, Berlin) and educator (David Yellin College of Education, B.Ed., Jerusalem), who has specialised for several years in ecologically inspired art and in gardens as spaces for experiencing nature and learning together. Since 2015, she has initiated various projects for and with people with refugee backgrounds in collaboration with various organisations (Erzähler ohne Grenzen, Erzählkunst e. V. Berlin, Atelier auf Rädern, among others).
Yifat Maor-Tanuschev aims to create experience-oriented encounters that foster a natural and welcoming connection between people and with nature, transcending differences in background and language. Since 2023, she has been establishing and managing community gardens in Berlin and will address key areas of tension and potential solutions in the webinar.
