Guest Researcher

Karl Dudman is an anthropologist and STS scholar from the UK, visiting IRI THESys for a year. His research explores moments of communication breakdown between institutions of climate governance (like the UNFCCC and IPCC) and publics in industrialised democracies, especially the US, UK, and Germany. His PhD, which he undertook at the University of Oxford’s Institute for Science Innovation and Society, examined the interactions between climate-vulnerable but conservative communities in coastal North Carolina, and state climate scientists trying to cultivate a conversation about climate change. Whilst in the US, Karl was also a fellow of Harvard’s Program on Science, Technology, and Society. Having completed his PhD, Karl is developing research on the phenomenon of ‘anti-net zero populism’ in the UK and Germany, whilst pursuing several other writing and photography-based projects.
