Doctoral Researcher
Developing statistical methods for high-dimensional data with applications in various fields

  • Production of rural space
  • Land use and rural development
  • Rural human settlements

“Government policies, new inhabitants, new elites, technologies and practices intermingle with rural life creating new spaces currently understudied. It is these new rural spaces that I want to explore. Focusing on the unique and ever-growing group of agricultural elites will be the main priority as they seem to affect the production of rural social space significantly.” Haoying Li

Haoying Li is a doctoral researcher at IRI THESys since October 2019. She has finished her bachelor and master degree at Southwest University in China majoring in human geography. Since 2016, Haoying Li has focused on the land use and rural development issue, mainly on the rural human settlements and various stakeholders of rural space in southwestern China, which aroused her interest to keep on studying the human-environment relationship.

Her PhD project aims to explore the production of space in rural communities in southwestern China. She tries to explore how conceptions of space in these communities are created at the interface between physical changes to the rural landscape via production modes and technologies and discourses introduced by external agents, and social, political, cultural and economic processes often enacted via sociocultural practices found among local residents. Especially, the role and significance of agricultural elites (such as returning migrant workers, professional farmers, urban capitalists, the young entrepreneurs, and other modern agricultural operators) is of great interest for her.

The overarching goal of her research is to develop statistical methods for high-dimensional and complex problems or “big data”. Haoying Li tries to combine the strengths of both Bayesian statistics and machine learning to develop statistically informed models that address issues of nowadays real data problems.
